Toyota TRD Off-Road: What It Means on the Tacoma, 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia

Toyota TRD Off-Road is a trim on the Tacoma and 4Runner and an available package on the Tundra and Sequoia. Either way, it is built around trail hardware. For Central Indiana shoppers, we recommend picking your vehicle first, then deciding whether that equipment fits how you drive. These comparisons cover 2026 models. Check our current offers as you compare.

Choosing Your Setup

Whether TRD Off-Road belongs on your list depends on the vehicle you need and where you drive. Start with 4 choices:

  • Truck or SUV: Decide first whether you need a pickup bed or an SUV.
  • Pavement or rough access: Occasional maintained gravel does not, by itself, justify Off-Road. Its traction controls and underside protection make more sense where camping access is uneven or trails are loose.
  • Manual or automatic: Tacoma offers a manual, but its automated terrain systems require the automatic.
  • Factory equipment: Compare Pro or Trailhunter when your plans call for their suspension, clearance or protection upgrades.

Trail Systems

TRD Off-Road combines traction equipment, off-road suspension and underside protection.
The systems handle different jobs:

  • Rear differential lock: Sends engine power evenly to both rear wheels to help them grip when traction is limited.
  • Multi-Terrain Select: Adjusts engine throttle and traction control for the selected terrain mode.
  • Crawl Control: Automatically manages throttle and brakes over rugged ground, leaving you to steer and choose a path.
  • Downhill Assist Control: Helps apply the brakes while descending a steep or slippery slope.

Model Differences

TRD Off-Road equipment varies with the model, transmission and starting trim.

These are the trim and package choices for 2026; every Off-Road configuration listed has four-wheel drive (4WD).

Model TRD Off-Road Form Eligible Versions Engines
Tacoma Trim Gas manual, gas automatic or hybrid automatic 2.4L turbo four-cylinder; gas or hybrid
4Runner Trim Off-Road and Off-Road Premium, each gas or hybrid 2.4L turbo four-cylinder; gas or hybrid
Tundra Package Selected SR5 gas configurations; Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition gas or hybrid Twin-turbo V6; gas or hybrid
Sequoia Package SR5, Limited, Platinum and 1794 Edition Twin-turbo V6 hybrid

Tacoma

Tacoma TRD Off-Road offers a manual transmission alongside mechanical trail equipment. Every version has a locking rear differential and Bilstein shocks with remote reservoirs. All-terrain tires and a composite front skid plate come standard, with protection for the transfer case and fuel tank.

The manual cannot have Crawl Control, Multi-Terrain Select or Downhill Assist Control. All 3 are standard with the automatic. Choose an automatic Tacoma, gas or hybrid, to get the systems that manage throttle and braking on rough ground.

A stabilizer bar you can disconnect is available as part of an option package on every Tacoma TRD Off-Road configuration.

Toyota lists Tacoma clearance as running clearance, so compare these figures only across Tacoma versions, not with the other models.

Tacoma Version Running Clearance
Gas Manual 10.7 in
Gas Automatic 11.0 in
Hybrid Automatic 11.5 in

4Runner

4Runner TRD Off-Road comes in gas and hybrid versions, all with an automatic transmission. The equipment includes Bilstein monotube shocks and an electronically locking rear differential. Its 18-inch wheels wear all-terrain tires, and composite skid protection covers the front, transfer case and fuel tank.

Multi-Terrain Select, Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control are standard. Front and rear recovery points are also included. Within the Off-Road trims, only the Off-Road Premium hybrid offers a stabilizer bar you can disconnect.

Choose this trim for its trail equipment, but compare Pro or Trailhunter if clearance is your deciding factor. The base Off-Road does not automatically sit higher than Sport, as these ground-clearance figures show.

4Runner Version Ground Clearance
Base TRD Sport 8.8 in
Gas TRD Off-Road 8.1 in
Gas Off-Road Premium and Both Hybrid Off-Road Versions 9.1 in

Tundra

Tundra's TRD Off-Road package lets you keep your preferred eligible trim: SR5, Limited, Platinum or 1794 Edition.

The package includes:

  • Bilstein suspension tuned for off-road use, plus skid protection and mudguards.
  • All-terrain tires on TRD wheels, with an electronically controlled rear differential lock.
  • Downhill Assist Control, Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control.

SR5 uses 18-inch wheels; the other eligible trims use 20-inch wheels. The package does not add horsepower, so choose the engine separately. If a manual is essential, consider Tacoma instead, because these Tundras use a 10-speed automatic.

These are the published minimum ground-clearance figures for Tundra trims eligible for TRD Off-Road.

Tundra Version Minimum Ground Clearance
SR5 Gas 9.3 in
Limited, Platinum or 1794 Edition Gas 9.4 in
Limited, Platinum or 1794 Edition Hybrid 8.5 in

Sequoia

Sequoia's TRD Off-Road package fits buyers who want a hybrid SUV with trail equipment. If you want gas power and a smaller SUV fits your needs, consider the 4Runner.

The package pairs Bilstein off-road shocks with all-terrain tires. Skid plates and a rear locking differential are included, as are Crawl Control and Downhill Assist Control. Multi-Terrain Select has 5 modes on Sequoia.

Multi-Terrain Monitor gives front, side and rear views to help you see rocks and other obstacles around the SUV. On SR5, Platinum and 1794 Edition, it comes with the TRD Off-Road package. On the Limited, it is not part of that package; it comes in a separate option package, so ask us whether the Limited you are looking at has both packages.

The eligible Sequoia trims have 8.6 inches of minimum ground clearance.

TRD Sport

If your Tacoma or 4Runner will stay on pavement, we would start with Sport or a regular trim.

Both Sport models use all-season tires. Tacoma Sport offers gas or hybrid power, while 4Runner Sport is gas only. Gas versions of both offer two-wheel drive (2WD) or 4WD.

Neither Sport model offers a rear locker or the automated terrain and descent systems. Tacoma Sport also lacks the Off-Road skid protection. Choose Off-Road when rougher access calls for that equipment.

For 2026, Tundra and Sequoia have no trim or package named TRD Sport.

TRD Pro and Trailhunter

TRD Pro and Trailhunter are the trims to compare when you want specific factory upgrades beyond Off-Road.

On Tacoma, both add a 1-inch front and 0.5-inch rear lift, with 33-inch tires. Pro uses FOX suspension and aluminum skid protection. Trailhunter has Old Man Emu suspension, steel underbody protection and rock rails. If steel protection and rails are on your build list, Trailhunter is the direct factory comparison.

4Runner Pro and Trailhunter both have 10.1 inches of clearance and 33° approach angles. Approach angle tells you how steep a slope the front can meet without the bumper hitting it. Their protection follows the same split as on Tacoma: aluminum on Pro, steel and rock rails on Trailhunter. On Tacoma and 4Runner alike, both trims use hybrid power and include the stabilizer disconnect as standard.

Tundra Pro adds a 1.1-inch front lift, and Sequoia Pro has 9.1 inches of clearance and a 23° approach angle. Neither model offers Trailhunter. If a factory lift or obstacle clearance drives your choice, compare those Pro configurations.

Central Indiana

Central Indiana's terrain alone is no reason to choose TRD Off-Road, because Hamilton County and most of the region are flat. For rough access routes, start with traction and underside protection rather than steep approach angles. Poor drainage also creates standing water and flooded low spots. No truck makes a flooded road safe to drive through.

North of roughly 191st Street, the land is open farmland where snow blows and drifts across roads.

Frequently Asked Questions

TRD Off-Road questions usually come down to the exact model and configuration.
