The 2.5-Liter Dynamic Force Engine and Toyota Hybrid System

Toyota's 2.5-liter four-cylinder hybrid engine powers seven 2026 models: the Camry, RAV4 Hybrid, Crown (XLE, Limited and Nightshade grades), Crown Signia, Sienna, Highlander Hybrid and Grand Highlander Hybrid. All 7 pair it with electric motor power through Toyota's hybrid system, but their system horsepower, drivetrains and EPA ratings differ. How the Toyota Hybrid System Works

In the seven 2026 Toyotas that use the 2.5-liter hybrid engine, the gas engine and electric motor power work together to move the vehicle. The Camry, Crown Signia, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid and Sienna use an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT). Toyota rates the engine and motors working together as net system horsepower. That is Toyota's own figure for the whole hybrid system, not the engine's horsepower plus the motor ratings added up.

The engine works with the parts below, and some of them change from model to model:

  • Front electric motor: On the RAV4 Hybrid, for example, the front electric motor drives the front wheels and recovers energy when you brake.
  • Rear electric motor: On the RAV4 Hybrid and the Sienna, all-wheel drive adds a separate rear electric motor. The Crown's 2.5-liter grades and the Crown Signia come only with all-wheel drive and carry both a front and a rear electric motor.
  • Regenerative braking: The Camry, Crown, Crown Signia and RAV4 Hybrid build regenerative braking into an electronically controlled braking system, so slowing down also recovers energy.
  • EV mode: The 2026 Camry's and RAV4 Hybrid's drive modes include Eco, Normal, Sport and EV, and the 2026 Crown and Crown Signia also offer EV mode. EV mode lets you drive solely on battery power at low speeds, for short distances and in limited circumstances, such as in a parking garage. Some conditions may prevent or limit its use, and your Owner's Manual explains how to use it and its limits.
  • Hybrid battery: The Camry and RAV4 Hybrid use a sealed lithium-ion battery, while the Sienna, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Crown and Crown Signia use a nickel-metal hydride battery.

Engine Output by Model

Toyota rates the 2.5-liter engine on its own, apart from the electric motors. That engine-only output shifts a little from one 2026 model to the next.

Model Engine-Only Horsepower Engine-Only Torque
Camry 184 hp at 6,000 rpm 163 lb-ft at 3,600 to 5,200 rpm
RAV4 Hybrid 183 hp at 6,000 rpm 163 lb-ft at 3,600 to 5,200 rpm

Frequently Asked Questions

In Toyota's hybrid system, the 2.5-liter gas engine works together with electric motor power in each of the seven 2026 models that use it. The RAV4 Hybrid's front electric motor, for example, drives the front wheels and recovers energy when you brake, and its all-wheel-drive versions add a separate rear electric motor. In the Camry, Crown Signia, Grand Highlander Hybrid, Highlander Hybrid, RAV4 Hybrid and Sienna, the transmission is an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission (ECVT). Models with an EV mode, such as the Camry and RAV4 Hybrid, can also run on battery power alone for short distances at low speeds, in limited circumstances.

Seven 2026 models use it: the Camry, RAV4 Hybrid, Crown (XLE, Limited and Nightshade grades), Crown Signia, Highlander Hybrid, Grand Highlander Hybrid and Sienna. Every 2026 Camry and every 2026 Sienna is a hybrid. The 2026 Crown Platinum and the 2026 Grand Highlander Hybrid MAX use a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder instead.

For the 2026 models, Toyota's net system ratings run from 225 hp in the front-wheel-drive Camry to 245 hp in the Sienna and Grand Highlander Hybrid. On its own, the engine is rated from 183 hp for the RAV4 Hybrid to 189 hp for the Sienna. The net rating is Toyota's figure for the whole hybrid system, so it is not the engine and motor ratings added up.

Among the seven 2026 2.5-liter hybrids, EPA combined ratings run from a high of 51 mpg in the front-wheel-drive Camry LE to a low of 34 mpg in the all-wheel-drive Grand Highlander Hybrid. Within the 2026 RAV4 Hybrid lineup, front-wheel drive rates highest at 43 mpg combined and the Woodland Edition lowest at 38.

It can. For 2026, all-wheel drive raises Toyota's net rating for the Camry from 225 to 232 hp and for the RAV4 Hybrid from 226 to 236 hp. The Sienna keeps 245 hp either way, and so does the Grand Highlander Hybrid. EPA combined ratings dip with all-wheel drive in several of these models: the Camry LE goes from 51 to 50 mpg, the Sienna from 36 to 35 and the Grand Highlander Hybrid from 36 to 34.

Yes, within limits. The 2026 Camry, Crown, Crown Signia and RAV4 Hybrid have an EV mode that lets you drive solely on battery power at low speeds, for short distances and in limited circumstances, such as in a parking garage. Some conditions may prevent or limit its use, and your Owner's Manual explains how to use it and its limits.

Hybrid MAX uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in place of the 2.5-liter. For 2026, Toyota rates the Crown Platinum's Hybrid MAX at 340 net hp, compared with 236 hp for the 2.5-liter Crown grades. The Grand Highlander's Hybrid MAX is rated at 362 net hp, against 245 hp for the 2.5-liter Grand Highlander Hybrid.

No. The 2026 Corolla Hybrid uses a 1.8-liter four-cylinder, and the 2026 Prius and Corolla Cross Hybrid use a 2.0-liter four-cylinder.
