Toyota i-FORCE MAX Hybrid Powertrain Guide

i-FORCE MAX is Toyota's name for two different hybrid engines: a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder in the 2026 4Runner, Tacoma and Land Cruiser, and a 3.4-liter twin-turbo V6 in the 2026 Tundra and Sequoia. Both carry the same name, but they don't make the same power, so it pays to know which one is in the truck or SUV you're considering. If you're shopping here in Central Indiana, you can explore Toyota's electrified lineup with us as you compare the two.

Inside the i-FORCE MAX Hybrid System

Each i-FORCE MAX engine works as part of a hybrid powertrain, and Toyota's net horsepower and torque ratings are for that whole hybrid system.

On the 2026 4Runner, Tundra and Sequoia, i-FORCE MAX is a parallel hybrid system with an electric motor/generator, a single unit that can work either as a motor or as a generator. That motor is rated at 48 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque in all three, so the four-cylinder and the V6 carry the same motor rating.

The 2026 4Runner, Land Cruiser and Tundra use a 288-volt sealed nickel-metal hydride hybrid battery, with 1.87 kWh of capacity in the Land Cruiser and Tundra.

On every 2026 i-FORCE MAX model, the automatic transmission is electronically controlled and includes a sequential shift mode and uphill/downhill shift logic.

Hybrid MAX vs. i-FORCE MAX

Despite the similar name, Hybrid MAX is its own Toyota hybrid system, not a version of i-FORCE MAX. For 2026, it is a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder hybrid offered on the Grand Highlander Limited and Platinum and on the Crown Platinum. On both models it pairs with a Direct Shift 6-speed automatic, with full-time electronic all-wheel drive on the Grand Highlander and all-wheel drive on the Crown. No i-FORCE MAX model uses that transmission or all-wheel drive. If either one is on your list, see the new Toyota Grand Highlander or the new Toyota Crown.
