Which Toyotas Have All-Wheel Drive? A Guide to Toyota AWD and 4WD

Of the 22 current Toyota models on this page, 19 offer all-wheel drive (AWD) or four-wheel drive (4WD): 14 with AWD and five with 4WD. Seven of the 19 have it on every version; on the other 12, some versions use front-wheel drive (FWD) or rear-wheel drive (RWD) instead. If an AWD SUV is on your list for Central Indiana winters, you can shop our new Toyota SUVs as you compare.

Of those seven, six come only with AWD: the GR Corolla, 2026 Crown, Crown Signia, C-HR, Highlander and bZ Woodland. The seventh, the Land Cruiser, comes only with 4WD.

Toyota's AWD and 4WD Systems, by Name

Toyota's AWD and 4WD Systems, by Name

Toyota gives its AWD and 4WD systems separate names, and the EPA rates AWD and 4WD as separate drive types. Toyota uses AWD on its cars, crossovers, SUVs and the Sienna minivan. Its 4WD systems are on the 4Runner, Tacoma, Tundra, Sequoia and Land Cruiser.

Toyota describes three of its AWD systems:

  • Electronic On-Demand AWD is the name on 10 of the 14 AWD models in the table, at least on some versions.

The 2026 Toyota Corolla’s Hybrid system uses a dedicated electric drive motor to automatically supply power to the rear wheels for instant improvement in traction.

For the 2026 Crown's traditional hybrid and the Crown Signia, the system can send the rear wheels up to 80% of the power. The Crown Signia's system can also run automatically in front-wheel-drive mode to optimize efficiency.

  • Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD is on the 2026 Highlander XSE, Limited and Platinum. Toyota says it "improves responsiveness and stability, sending up to 50 percent of the power to the rear and then distributing more power to the wheel that needs it."

  • GR-FOUR AWD on the 2026 GR Corolla has three power settings the driver selects, each with its own front-to-rear torque split.

Here is the front-to-rear torque split for each GR-FOUR setting.

GR-FOUR setting Torque split, front to rear
Normal 60:40
Track 60:40 to 30:70
Gravel 50:50

Toyota's 4WD comes in part-time and full-time versions. Full-time 4WD is on the 2027 Land Cruiser, the 4WD versions of the 2026 4Runner Limited and Platinum, and the 2026 Tacoma Limited i-FORCE MAX. Every other 4WD Toyota in the table uses part-time 4WD.

You'll also see these AWD names:

  • Dynamic Torque Control, part of the AWD name on the gas 2026 Grand Highlander and gas 2026 Corolla Cross
  • Full-Time Electronic AWD, which comes with the Hybrid MAX powertrain on the 2026 Grand Highlander and the 2026 Crown Platinum
  • All-Wheel Drive, the plain name on the 2026 Highlander XLE and the electric 2027 C-HR, bZ and bZ Woodland
What AWD Costs at the Pump

What AWD Costs at the Pump

For the same model, model year and engine, the EPA usually rates the AWD or 4WD version of the Toyotas below about 1 to 3 mpg lower combined. On the electric 2027 bZ, AWD costs efficiency and driving range instead. This table pairs each two-wheel-drive version with its matching AWD or 4WD version, using EPA-estimated combined ratings.

Model, year and version Two-wheel drive AWD or 4WD Difference
2027 Prius vs. Prius AWD 55 mpg 53 mpg 2 mpg less
2027 Prius XLE/LTD vs. Prius AWD XLE/LTD 51 mpg 48 mpg 3 mpg less

2026 Grand Highlander Hybrid (2.5-liter) 36 mpg 34 mpg 2 mpg less
2026 Sienna 36 mpg 35 mpg 1 mpg less
2026 Tundra (gas) 20 mpg 19 mpg 1 mpg less
2026 Tundra Hybrid, not TRD Pro 22 mpg 20 mpg 2 mpg less
2026 Sequoia 22 mpg 20 mpg 2 mpg less
2026 4Runner (gas) 22 mpg 21 mpg 1 mpg less
2027 bZ XLE FWD Plus vs. XLE AWD (74.7 kWh battery) 131 MPGe, 314 miles of range 120 MPGe, 288 miles of range 11 MPGe and 26 miles less
2027 bZ Limited 125 MPGe, 299 miles of range 117 MPGe, 278 miles of range 8 MPGe and 21 miles less

A model without a two-wheel-drive version, such as the Highlander or Land Cruiser, has nothing to pair with, so it isn't in the table. The Camry rows show 2026 ratings because the EPA hasn't rated the 2027 Camry yet. The Corolla Hybrid and Prius each take two rows: the EPA rates two Corolla Hybrid versions, one with Normal and Eco modes and one that adds a Sport mode, and it rates the Prius in two groups.

Do You Need AWD in Central Indiana?

Do You Need AWD in Central Indiana?

Whether you need AWD depends on where and how you drive. This table shows a normal winter here in Central Indiana, based on National Weather Service normals for 1991 through 2020.

Normal winter measure Figure
Snow in a year 25.5 inches
Snow from December through February 21.2 inches
Days a year with a high at or below 32°F 27
Days a year with a low at or below 0°F 3
First measurable snow Around November 24
Last measurable snow Around March 16
Winter days with an inch or more on the ground About one in four

Hamilton County, north of Indianapolis, runs slightly snowier than the city. Indianapolis sits near the line where winter storms switch between rain and snow, so winter here brings freezing rain, sleet and freeze-thaw swings along with snow. Some winters bring very little snow: 2022-23 brought just 5.7 inches, about a quarter of the December-through-February normal.

The land is flat and open. North of roughly 191st Street, open farmland lets snow blow and drift across north-county roads, which are also exposed to crosswinds.

On the main routes, the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) pre-treats with brine before storms and re-salts every 2 to 3 hours. Brine goes down even on frosty or freezing-drizzle days that bring no snow. SR 37, I-69, US 31, SR 32 and 146th Street are priority routes.

For the 2026 Sienna, Toyota says: "Whether you're on gravel, rain or snow, Sienna's available Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system helps give you confidence on unfamiliar roads and surfaces."

Tell us where your winter miles take you, and we'll go over the AWD and two-wheel-drive versions of the Toyota you like.

Toyota AWD and 4WD Models by Type

Toyota AWD and 4WD Models by Type

The AWD and 4WD Toyotas fall into three groups: cars, SUVs and crossovers (with the Sienna minivan), and trucks and 4x4s.

Cars With AWD

Cars With AWD

Five Toyota cars offer AWD:

  • Every grade of the 2027 Camry offers AWD. For the 2026 Camry, Toyota rated AWD versions at 232 net combined horsepower, against 225 for front-wheel drive.
  • For AWD in a 2027 Corolla, look to the Corolla Hybrid LE or SE; the gas grades and the Hybrid XLE come with front-wheel drive only.
  • AWD versions of the 2027 Prius add a rear motor rated at 30 kW (40 hp), and Toyota puts net power at 196 hp with AWD and 194 hp without.
  • The 2026 Toyota Crown has no front-wheel-drive version. For 2027, Toyota lists the Crown in four versions: the Crown XLE Hybrid AWD, Crown Limited Hybrid AWD, Crown Nightshade Hybrid AWD and Crown Platinum Hybrid MAX AWD.
  • The 2026 GR Corolla has GR-FOUR AWD with either the manual or the automatic transmission.
SUVs, Crossovers and a Minivan

SUVs, Crossovers and a Minivan

Nine AWD Toyotas are SUVs, crossovers or the Sienna minivan:

  • The 2026 Corolla Cross offers AWD as an option on the gas model, and every Corolla Cross Hybrid comes with it.
  • All six grades of the 2026 RAV4 offer AWD.
  • The Toyota Crown Signia comes with AWD on both of its 2026 grades, the XLE and Limited.
  • Among the electric models, the Toyota C-HR has AWD on both 2027 grades. The 2027 bZ offers it on the XLE and Limited, whose AWD versions come with X-MODE and its Snow/Dirt, Deep Snow/Mud and Grip Control modes. The 2027 bZ Woodland, a separate model rather than a bZ grade, has AWD on both of its versions, the bZ Woodland and bZ Woodland Premium.
  • Every 2026 Highlander has AWD, with Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD on the gas XSE, Limited and Platinum, and Electronic On-Demand AWD on the Highlander Hybrid.
  • The 2026 Grand Highlander pairs a different AWD system with each of its three powertrains: gas, Hybrid and Hybrid MAX.
  • AWD grades of the 2026 Sienna add a rear electric motor, which Toyota rates at 40 kW (54 hp) and 89 lb-ft.
Trucks and 4x4s

Trucks and 4x4s

Five Toyotas offer 4WD instead of AWD:

  • The 2026 4Runner offers both part-time and full-time 4WD, depending on the version.
  • The 2026 Tacoma comes as a 4x2 or a 4x4, and every i-FORCE MAX hybrid is a 4x4.
  • The 2026 Tundra and the 2026 Toyota Sequoia share Toyota's 4WDemand part-time 4WD.
  • Both versions of the 2027 Land Cruiser, the Land Cruiser 1958 and the Land Cruiser, come with full-time 4WD.
How to Choose a Toyota With AWD or 4WD

How to Choose a Toyota With AWD or 4WD

Three questions narrow down which AWD or 4WD Toyota fits your driving.

  • Do you want a model that always has AWD, or one that gives you a choice? Some models have AWD or 4WD on every version, so there's nothing to pick. On the others, check which grades give you the choice: every 2027 Camry grade offers front-wheel drive or AWD, while on the 2026 Sequoia only the SR5 and Limited offer a choice of rear-wheel drive or 4WD.
  • Do you need a car, an SUV or a truck? Each body style has AWD choices except trucks and 4x4s, which use 4WD. If AWD is a must and you're deciding between the GR Corolla and the GR86, go with the GR Corolla, which comes only with AWD; the GR86 is rear-wheel drive.
  • How much fuel economy will you trade? In the EPA table above, two-wheel drive rates higher in every pair except the 2026 Camry SE and XLE, which rate the same either way. With AWD, the 2027 bZ also gives up some of its electric range.

Whichever Toyota you're leaning toward, check the current new Toyota specials before you decide, then schedule a test drive to see how its AWD or 4WD system feels on the road. If the car you drive now needs attention before winter, you can look into our tire service or read our winter service FAQ.

Frequently Asked Questions

Of the 22 current models we cover, 14 offer AWD, and five more offer 4WD instead, for 19 in all. The Highlander, Crown Signia, 2026 Crown, GR Corolla, C-HR and bZ Woodland have AWD on every version. The Camry, Prius, RAV4, Sienna, Corolla Cross, bZ and Grand Highlander offer AWD alongside front-wheel drive, as does the Corolla on its Hybrid LE and SE grades. For an AWD SUV or crossover, start with our new Toyota SUVs.

Among the models we cover, the Corolla Hatchback, GR86 and Mirai offer neither. On the 2027 Corolla sedan, all three gas grades and the Hybrid XLE are front-wheel drive only.

No. Toyota gives them separate names, and the EPA rates them as separate drive types. Toyota's AWD is on its cars, crossovers, SUVs and the Sienna minivan, while its 4WD is on the Tacoma, Tundra, 4Runner, Sequoia and Land Cruiser. That 4WD comes in part-time and full-time versions; the 2027 Land Cruiser, for one, has full-time 4WD.

It's the AWD name Toyota uses most often: 10 of the 14 AWD models we cover carry it on at least some versions, including the Camry, Prius, RAV4 and Sienna. In the 2026 Corolla Hybrid's version of the system, a dedicated electric drive motor automatically powers the rear wheels for what Toyota calls an "instant improvement in traction."

AWD usually costs about 1 to 3 mpg combined in EPA ratings when you compare the same model, year and engine. The 2026 RAV4 LE and SE, for example, rate 43 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 42 mpg with AWD. On the electric 2027 bZ, AWD costs 21 to 26 miles of EPA-estimated range.

It depends on where and how you drive. Normal annual snowfall in Central Indiana is 25.5 inches, and winter also brings freezing rain, sleet and freeze-thaw swings. North of roughly 191st Street, snow drifts across north-county roads, while the state pre-treats and re-salts priority routes such as SR 37, I-69 and US 31. We're glad to talk through your winter drive and the Toyota you're considering.

Yes. On the 2026 RAV4, the XSE, Woodland and Limited come only with AWD, and the LE, SE and XLE Premium offer front-wheel drive or AWD. Toyota calls the system Electronic On-Demand All-Wheel Drive. You can shop new RAV4 inventory with us.
